ESPN3 to Broadcast National Chicken Wing Eating Contest
I’m not sure what’s hot right now; is it hot wings or competitive eating contests? Maybe it’s both. After watching ESPN’s Fourth of July coverage of Nathan’s Hot Dog eating competition, I think it may be competitive eating contests. Not that there’s anything wrong with wings, I just think that if ratings for the Nathan’s event sucked, it’s doubtful ESPN would consider covering a chicken wing eating contest, especially on a Labor Day Sunday at the outset of football season. Either ratings were damn good or ESPN is doing some serious dice rolling.
Nonetheless, wings are on the docket for ESPN’s next competitive eating coverage. The U.S. National Buffalo Wing-Eating Championship is a main event at the annual National Buffalo Wing Festival at Coca-Cola Field in Buffalo, NY. This year’s event marks its 13th year and will be televised live on the ESPN 3 channel. Coverage begins at 4pm Eastern, on Sunday August 31, 2014.
Currently ranked number one in the world, food-eating legend Joey Chestnut who won the Nathan’s hot dog event seems to be the odds-on favorite, although it won’t be an easy task. The field is filled with a long list of admirable foes, especially the women. Yep, last year the women dominated by taking the top three finishes. After 12 minutes, Miki Sudo led the pack with 178 wings, Michelle Lesco pounded down 158 and Sonya “The Black Widow” Thomas finished up with a measly 141.
Rather than count wings individually like with the hot dogs, wings are weighed before and after the competition to determine who consumed the most meat. The winner takes home $2,500 and all the wings they can eat. What a job!
Don’t tell me a bunch of grown men and women stuffing their mouths with messy Buffalo wings as fast as they possibly can isn’t exciting. It’s sort of like a train wreck; you have to look.
The contest is governed by Major League Eating, which oversees food eating competition like Nathan’s hot dog eating contest. For more information, visit their website:
